Detroit DD16 engine

Detroit

Detroit engines perform at their peak for miles and miles with best-in-class fuel economy and low-cost maintenance and service. Every step of their design, testing, and support process builds quality into every engine that bears the Detroit name.

Detroit

The toughest, most reliable engines for decades

DD16

The DD16™ is the largest, most powerful engine to roll off the Detroit assembly line. Detroit offers a big-bore workhorse with up to 600 horsepower and 2,050 lb-ft of torque, delivering more efficient and dependable power and performance. Beyond performance, Detroit engineers have been able to meet GHG17 requirements while improving fuel economy.

The exclusive second-generation Amplified Common Rail System (ACRS™) and simple turbocharger combine to deliver instant acceleration like no other engine and torque response other drivers will envy.

  • The right amount of fuel at the right time makes for an extremely quiet, smooth combustion and meets strict emissions requirements.
  • Variable injection patterns give you fuel economy across a wide variety of engine operations.
  • Turbo compounding helps you use less fuel without sacrificing power, making it the perfect solution for rising fuel prices. It recovers thermal energy from the exhaust stream, converting normally lost energy into usable power.

Like all Detroit engines, the DD16 comes with SCR emissions technology and their exclusive 1-Box Configuration helping meet stringent emission standards at the tailpipe.

Above-frame rail, cartridge-style filters and unmatched parts availability with expert service at 800-plus authorized service outlets means you can be in and out of the shop in no time. With big-bore durability and reliability and a 1-million-mile B50 life, you’ll be doing the heaviest lifting on the job for years to come. If maintenance issues come up on the road, you can count on Detroit Virtual Technician™ remote to let you know how serious the fault code is, where the nearest part you need is located, and when you can get into the next available service bay. It can even schedule your repair appointment for you.

The exclusive second-generation Amplified Common Rail System (ACRS™) and simple turbocharger combine to deliver instant acceleration like no other engine and torque response other drivers will envy.

DD15

The new DD15™ opens a new era in heavy-duty engines. Now there’s no need to choose between pulling power and affordable fuel economy. A revolutionary engine design that delivers what you expect from Detroit: bullet-proof reliability and easy maintenance. The design offers a majority of its peak torque down to 1,000 rpm. You’ll treat on-ramps like drag strips. With up to 50 bonus horsepower, the thrill of the road is back. Compared to the Series 60, which has legendary fuel economy, the DD15 runs up to 5% more miles per gallon.

DD13

Detroit DD13 engineThe DD13™ is built for bottom-line performance. Designed specifically for less-than-truckload, regional-distribution and vocational applications, the DD13 delivers the serviceability and performance you need — and up to 5% better fuel economy.

The DD13 provides a smart, fuel-efficient design that makes the most of every gallon, offering up to 5% better fuel economy than a similarly specked MBE 4000. It pulls this off by integrating ground-breaking technologies — the Amplified Common Rail System (ACRS™) optimizes each injection event, and an advanced cooling system decreases fan on time. Additionally, it pulls strongly down to 1,100 rpm, making it easy to drive in the fuel-economy “sweet spot.”

The DD13 lowers your cost of ownership with easier serviceability. All the filters (oil, fuel, and coolant) are positioned above the frame rails, and it can go further between trips to the shop with the longest service intervals in its class. The DD13 shares 65% of its parts with the DD15™ plus its common service operations ensure trained technicians are available. You can rest easy knowing we’ll have the part you need, when you need it with a trained technician ready to serve you at one of our more than 800 parts and service outlets in North America. Whether you’re in a big city, or the backwoods, you can get back up and on the road again, fast.

Driving the DD13 gives you power and torque on demand. With a peak torque range of up to 500 rpm — from 1,100 to 1,600 rpm —your “sweet spot” is a larger “sweet stretch.” The engine’s robust construction extends Detroit’s track record of engines with a B50 life of one million miles. Another big part of the reliability stems from the asymmetrical turbocharger. It has fewer moving parts versus the competitor’s VGT or waste-gated turbocharger. Other key performance features include:

  • An integrated Jacobs engine brake with up to 546 braking horsepower.
  • A ribbed cast-iron block that lowers noise vibration harshness (NVH).
  • A robust rear gear train.

The DD13’s advanced design also allows for the smooth and seamless integration of BlueTec® SCR technology — the industry’s only proven solution for reducing emissions to meet EPA 2010 standards without compromising power, fuel economy, or performance.

Series 60

Detroit’s signature engine, the Series 60® gives you the perfect balance of power and fuel efficiency for heavy-duty applications.

The Series 60 has been a success from the start of production in 1987. It was the first fully integrated heavy-duty diesel engine with electronic controls in the world. Since then, the Series 60 engine continues to set the standard with innovative technology and superior fuel economy in the competitive heavy-duty diesel engine market.

There are several reasons for the success of the Series 60 engine. It was the first heavy-duty diesel engine designed exclusively with electronic engine controls. Detroit Diesel Electronic Controls, or DDEC, are now in their fifth generation. In addition to precise engine control and protection, DDEC offers a variety of driver-training, fleet-management, and vehicle-enhancement features such as cruise control, vehicle speed limiting, and fuel-economy reports.

The Series 60 also features an overhead camshaft that provides a number of customer benefits. By eliminating pushrods and their associated space claim, the cylinder head design is optimized. Intake and exhaust ports are straight and short to minimize internal pumping losses. Head bolts are evenly spaced to provide uniform clamp load on the head gasket, greatly improving reliability. With no pushrods and their inherent strength limitations, the fuel injectors are actuated directly by the cam lobes, which allow for increased injection pressures, improving fuel economy and performance while reducing emissions.

Overall, the Series 60 engine provides truckers with the best combination of fuel economy, performance, driver satisfaction, long life to overhaul, reliability, low cost of operation, ease of service, and residual value.
